Life Processes Class 10

Life Processes Class 10

The Life Processes class 10 Science chapter 6 is divided into four subparts each dealing with different system viz Nutrition, Respiration, Transportation and Excretion. While preparing the chapter, one should give special attention to the diagrams and labelling and should absorb the conceptual aspects of the working of these life processes which include the role of different enzymes and the synchronization of different organs in order to work as an organ system and perform essential processes for the survival of life.

NTSEguru helps you to boost your preparation with the most probable questions in accordance with the revised pattern of X board examination by our expert team of faculties.

Life Processes Class 10 Important Questions

1.   Why is nutrition necessary for organism?

Ans.     Nutrition is required for:

            (i)    Acquiring energy for various metabolic processes of the body.

            (ii)   Growth of new cells.

(iii)   Repair of worn out cells.

            (iv)   Developing resistance against diseases.

2.    Write the basic steps involved in the process of photosynthesis.

Ans.     1. Absorption of solar energy by chlorophyll.

            2. Splitting of water molecule to form hydrogen and oxygen.

            3. Reduction of CO2 to carbohydrates.

3.   With the help of an activity show that CO2 is necessary for the process of photosynthesis.

Ans.     1.   Take a potted plant.

            2.   Place the plant in dark for 2-3 days for destarching.

            3.   Place a leaf of the plant in a wide-mouthed bottle having KOH solution inside and close the bottle.

            4.   Place apparatus in sunlight for few hours.

            5.   Pluck the leaf which was kept inside the bottle and the one which was not and test for the presence of starch by putting Iodine solution on the leaf.

            6.   The leaf which was kept inside had not turned blue-black giving an indication that there was no formation of starch. The other leaf had turned blue-black showing the formation of starch in sunlight.

This shows that CO2 is necessary for the process of photosynthesis.

4.   Describe the exchange of gases in the lungs and tissues.

Ans.     After breathing, the O2 diffuses from alveoli into blood. O2 combines with haemoglobin to from oxyhaemoglobin and is transported in this form from alveoli to tissues of body. On coming closer to tissues, the molecule breaks allowing diffusion of free O2 into tissues. As amount of CO2 increases in tissues after respiration, CO2 diffuses from tissues to blood and is transported back to lungs in the dissolved form in plasma. When blood containing CO2 comes closer to lungs, CO2 is diffused back to lungs from blood.

5.    How water raises in a tall tree?

Ans. Water or sap is lifted from near the root tip to the shoot tip against the force of gravity, sometimes to the height of 100 m. Some theories were put forward in this aspect:

Root pressure theory.

Capillary action theory.

Transpiration pull theory: According to this theory the transpiration pull generated in the leaves pulls the water column in tracheids and vessels of xylem. It is the most accepted theory.
